Smiths Chips ontstond rond 1920 in Engeland en werd opgericht door Frank Smith. In 1950 vond Smiths Chips zijn weg naar het Europese vasteland, en in 1960 werd de eerste Belgische fabriek geopend.
In 2001 werd de naam Smiths vervangen door Lay’s. De moedermaatschappij, PepsiCo, wilde de naam in lijn brengen met haar internationale strategie. De naam Smiths bleef in België nog enige tijd bestaan voor andere snacks, zoals Bugles en Wokkels, maar deze producten worden tegenwoordig doorgaans onder de merknamen Lay’s of Cheetos verkocht.
Smiths Chips was verantwoordelijk voor de introductie van Flippo’s, de verzamelrage van de jaren 90. In 1995 werden ze voor het eerst in chipszakken gestopt. Dit creëerde een grote hype onder de kinderen in België en Nederland.
In de vroege jaren van Smiths, werden kleine, blauwe zakjes zout meegegeven in de chipszakken. Hierdoor kon men zelf bepalen hoeveel zout ze op hun chips wenste.
