On old sunscreen bottles, you would often see factor 1, 2, or 3. This referred to the first generations of sun protection products, from a time when the Sun Protection Factor (SPF) was just being introduced.
Factors 1 to 3 offered only minimal protection against UVB rays. The SPF indicates how many times longer you can stay in the sun without burning compared to being unprotected. With SPF 2, you can theoretically stay in the sun twice as long, with SPF 3 three times as long, and so on. In practice, factor 2 blocked about 50% of UVB rays, and factor 3 slightly more, but this is still much less than the protection offered by modern products.
Nowadays, such low SPFs are no longer used. This is because we now know more about the risks of skin cancer and UV damage, and because stricter international regulations have been introduced. Manufacturers are required to adhere to standards that prescribe a higher degree of protection.
That is why we now use higher SPFs, such as 30 and 50. SPF 30 protects you against about 97% of UVB rays, while SPF 50 offers about 98% protection.
